The Department of Anthropology and Philosophy was set up in the academic year 1992-1993, and changed its name to the Department of Anthropology, Philosophy and Social Work in 2001-2002. It has three main areas of activity—teaching, research and transfer—and it is part of the Faculty of Arts on the Campus Catalunya of the URV.
As far as teaching is concerned, the Department is responsible for the 2nd cycle degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology, the degree in Social Work (coordinated in conjunction with the Faculty of Legal Sciences) and the following postgraduate courses: Master’s Degree in Urban Anthropology, Master’s Degree in Medicine and International Health, Master’s Degree in Migrations and Social Mediation and Master’s Degree in Youth and Society (interuniversity). It is also responsible for the following doctoral programmes: Anthropology, Migrations and Social Mediation, and Social Intervention.
In research, it should be pointed out that the Research Group in Social Anthropology is recognised and funded by the Catalan Government. The department has been awarded many competitive research projects, and it is one of the departments with the highest number of doctorands in Spain.
The main guidelines governing the research of the Social Anthropology Group Department for the period 2009-2013 focus on transnationalist processes as the unit of analysis, and combine global transnational dynamics with local experiences from various observation units.
The transfer and outreach activity of the DAFITS has led to many publications in national and international journals and books, non-state regulated courses and numerous public activities.
